One of the problems with being a pest controller is finding the energy to deal with the pests that you get in your own home - I little like decorators who never get around to their own houses. Around Autumn time I invariably get mice in the understairs cupboard of my own house, coming in through the gas pipe entry from outside.
However, even in our own offices we are currently under attack from cluster flies! These flies lay their eggs in the soil and the larvae have the charming habit of burrowing into earthworms where they will develop and then pupate. As the Autumn temperature drops, the flies erupt from the soil in their millions and look for the highest warm point to overwinter – and in my office, being the top floor of an office block, they find their way in through the minutest of gaps such as the ventilation around double glazing units, under corrugations in the roof tiles, in through airbricks.
We often find them in brand-new built offices where the architects swear blind that the building is completely sealed...well it isn’t to cluster flies!! In the countryside, loft spaces can sometimes be found inches deep in the flies...in my office they are simply an annoyance, buzzing around the light fittings, and then walking slowly and a bit dopily around the windows – luckily we have the means to deal with them – electric fly killers and insecticide around the window frames, followed by regular hovering...but if you don’t have the means to do it then please get in touch...
