Approach to pest control in Sussex

We focus on Exclusion, Restriction and, as a last resort, Destruction.

  • ‘Exclusion’ - find the way a pest is entering a property and close it
  • ‘Restriction’ - make an environment less attractive to pests
  • ‘Destruction’ - if necessary, use chemical and physical methods to remove pests

Whenever possible, we use traditional traps to capture rodents - they are safer for humans and other animals - and we always try to limit the amount of chemicals we use to get a job done. We never blanket spray and only use pesticides as a last resort. We have a range of alternative methods that are effective but safe. For example, we use non-toxic silica dust to dehydrate insects such as cockroaches, and pheromone traps for moth control.

Whenever possible we use green pest control methods, but our primary consideration is always the delivery of effective pest control.

The key to successful domestic pest control intervention is understanding the requirements of the householder and then building a remediation program around it.

Pest control for your Sussex business

You don’t have to be a hotel, restaurant or take away to give serious consideration to preventative pest control. All businesses should keep their properties free from pests, it is a basic legal requirement and without it you can face fines. Remember, even if you are only serving employees food, you will receive a hygiene rating from the Environmental Health Officers and, if you fail to perform at the required level, you will be shut down

Every year, hundreds of business are fined or closed down because they haven’t invested in their future through a pest prevention contract. This will provide you with peace-of-mind and will remove any unwanted financial surprises that can result from an infestation. Ordinarily, a contract will involve eight inspections a year, plus a full report.

Reviews about our Sussex pest control service

"We live on the 13th floor of a block of flats with a balcony and views out to Beachy Head in East Sussex. Unfortunately, we had seagulls and pigeons making nests in our plant pots on the balcony and laying eggs. They were also making a terrible mess. My husband put some netting across the balcony to keep the birds off, but it meant we couldn't get out on the balcony and it spoiled our views. It also didn't look nice.

So, we decided to find a professional company to help us and we're really pleased we found Cleankill. The customer service was fantastic and the way the netting has been installed means we can now sit out and enjoy our balcony again. It's brilliant as the holes in the netting are large and don't interrupt our views but the netting still keeps the birds off.

The two technicians who came out were really polite and efficient. I highly recommend Cleankill to anyone who has a problem with pest birds."

Private client, St Leonard's

“I’m very happy with the service we receive from Cleankill. They are very responsive if there is ever a problem and I can rely on them to come immediately if it’s urgent. The staff are very good at communicating and always let me know exactly what has been done. Overall, Cleankill is easy to deal with – it’s a very nice company to work with.”

Hydro Hotel, Eastbourne

"I have been dealing with Cleankill for many years now, as in my opinion they are by far the most professional Pest Control Company in the area. Living in the heart of the countryside I suffer with the usual ‘rat and mice’ problems. We have a contract with Cleankill, at a very reasonable rate, which gives me complete peace of mind and keeps the rodents down to a minimum. We have also had occasion to need wasp nests removed, which again are always dealt with quickly and efficiently. I thoroughly recommend Cleankill to all my clients."

Hawks fly in to solve gull crematorium problem

Cleankill was contacted by Eastbourne Borough Council to help stop gulls dive-bombing mourners when they leave the crematorium’s chapel. Councillor Margaret Bannister, portfolio holder for bereavement services, said: “Staff at the crematorium were becoming aware of the problems that the seagulls were causing to people attending services or visiting the grounds. It was felt that we had to call in bird control experts as the last thing crematorium visitors want is to have to worry about being attacked by seagulls. The hawk solution has proved very effective, with the benefit that it does not harm the gulls.

Around eight breeding pairs of seagulls had made their home at the crematorium. The birds usually nest between March and September and get particularly aggressive during this period. The Harris Hawks are brought to the site every Thursday morning before the funerals start. They fly around the site, scaring the gulls, who eventually decide to find alternate nesting sites.

Helping to preserve a Sussex treasure

The Bluebell Railway had a serious infestation of Common Clothes Moths (Tineola bisselliella). Cleaning staff had tried to deal with it using aerosol sprays, but this will only kill adults and not deal with the larvae.

Before management at the Bluebell Railway spoke to us, they had already spoken to several other companies and some had quoted exorbitant prices. We came up with a plan to limited disruption and could assure the Bluebell team that the materials would be safe and not cause damage. When our technicians inspected the 40 carriages, we found 22 were - some wool covers were completely eaten away to reveal the hessian backing.

To solve the problem, we devised a strategic plan involving the 22 couches and our technicians had to undergo a railway induction course for safety and safety. The infested carriages were isolated and sprayed. All seats were lifted and every nook and cranny was treated. In addition, curtains and storerooms were checked and treated.

Our technicians had to return three weeks later to re-spray the affected areas. In addition, sticky pheromone traps were supplied to attract male moths and give an early warning to future problems.

Finally, we worked with Bluebell staff to update their cleaning regime to include checks for insects.
