How will the lack of April showers affect pests this spring?

It’s been a glorious spring so far (said in a whisper, with fingers firmly crossed that it continues), with temperatures reaching 20 degrees and the sun making a regular appearance. While we relish this beautiful weather, it's worth being mindful of the consequences a warm spring can bring. The lack of cold April showers results in earlier emergence and increased breeding rates for pests, the dry weather also forces some pests to look elsewhere for water sources. So, with the warm, dry weather set to continue and rumours of a heatwave on the horizon what does this mean for pests?

Earlier Emergence

The warmer temperatures can trigger pests to emerge from their hibernation earlier, which also means they are active for longer. So you might spot some pests like wasps, flies and ants (that are more active during the summer months) a bit earlier this year.

Reduced Water Availability

We have had the odd day of rain, but not the April showers that we are used to. Dry weather can negatively impact food and water sources available to pests which prompts them to seek alternative options, including inside homes. Ants, for instance, may venture into a property in search of food and water.

Increased Breeding

For some pests, higher temperatures can accelerate their reproduction rates which leads to more generations and increased populations.

Nest Building Closer to Properties

If there is a lack of water sources due to dry weather, pests are compelled to build their nests closer to buildings so they can access water easily.

Stress on Plants

Warmer temperatures and dry conditions can stress plants and trees, making them more susceptible to damage by pests.

It’s crucial for both your home and business to be aware of these potential pest problems so you can put in place preventive measures, such as keeping areas dry and addressing any potential leaks.
