One of Cleankill’s core services is bird prevention work. This includes installing netting and other types of ‘proofing’ to deter birds such as pigeons and seagulls from landing and nesting. Bird droppings are unsightly and cause a number of health problems, while nests can block guttering and provide a home for mites and other insects.

Having just taken over the administration of some of Cleankill’s pest bird prevention work Lucy Knight, along with her colleague Lou, spent the day with our bird team to understand more about what the job involves out in the field and the challenges.

The Sussex Bird Control team threw the pair in at the deep end and took them in a 52-metre aerial platform. The platform was being used to access the gutters that needed mesh to prevent birds from roosting on a commercial building. Lucy described the experience: “We were sure holding on tight. It was interesting to see how the team uses harnesses and ropes in order to work safely on a roof.” Lou added: “A lot is involved when working at height and health and safety is so important. It made me realise how complex some jobs can be.”

Lucy also visited the London bird team to observe a netting job. Lucy explained: “I can now understand what difficulties our technicians face and the problems that can occur when trying to complete the work. It was good to learn about the different tools the team uses and the different approaches to get the job done in the most efficient way.”

Cleankill prides itself on professionalism and efficiency which is best achieved through teamwork. Now Lucy and Lou understand the procedures out in the field, they can help the team and advise customers better than before. Lucy explains: “Now I can understand further when there is an issue and better assist the team in the future.” Lou concluded: “It was an interesting day, learning what they do and understanding the process from start to finish. It’s good to get to know the guys out in the field better too.”
